Cayo checks in from Houston Texas

Cayo, who use to be able to play with several of our Vs, recently moved with his family to Houston, Texas. His family reports they have found it to be a very dog friendly city with lots of parks that are  called "Bark Parks" for the dogs.

They have also been able to make contact with a Vizsla group that gets together for play dates and will be able to join a group of about 10 Vs. They all seem to be doing well in the sun and are settling into their new lives there. It was wonderful to hear from them and to receive these photos of Cayo!

Thank you so much for sharing these photos with us; they mean a lot.

4 male puppy Vs meet at the park

4 male 8 month old Vizslas met at a park for great play times Easter weekend.Cayo on the left in the camouflage colour was bred by my friend Dean and is one week older than the other boys, all from our July litter. Angus is in the green collar, Blue is in blue and Finn is in Red. The dogs and  owners had a great time and hope to get together on a regular bases to let the dogs play.

The video below  shows a lovely black dog that joined the group play and also the 'dangers' of V who don't mind running into your legs as if they were young trees in the way of a hunting dog..charging through ! The thrill of  running and playing every Vizsla understands!

Thank you so much for the photos and the video; they mean so much to us and to be able to share this experience with you  owners and with those who see them on the blog.

Day in the sun and not too cold

Today not only is there a break in the cold, but the upper field and yard has been cleared for dogs and owners to enjoy.   The sun is still low in the south but the warmer days have helped to speed along this often coldest and darkest month of the year.  Visitor Cayo and our Sydney took the opportunity to romp for hours yesterday and today. Tomorrow the cold arrives again so enjoy it pups!

Cayo taking a break

The long shadows mid day tell us the sun is still low in the south but the dogs are enjoying the  bright sun and warmer days.  The hours of daylight too are slowly increasing each day. We know spring is  still several months away but on a day like today, standing against the south side of the garage, one can  feel a little sun warmth to enjoy and the hope of spring.

It's a cold day

Cayo wonders who ordered this cold weather!

Can you make up a game  and stop taking pictures or let me sleep!

Jewel on the window sill and Sydney on the sofa meanwhile are watching the birds at the feeders and making sure their domain is free of vermin..cats, magpies, cars on the road etc.

Cayo enjoying the heat wave

Cayo is just 6 months old. He is visiting for a few weeks and is enjoying the warm weather break we have had recently.

Cayo and Sydney play in the warm weather. It is very slippery I found but these young one seem to be doing well on the snow and neither was falling or straining. Jewel was staying on level ground and away from them!

Cayo is here..just over 6 months of age

Even when one  has had many dogs and dogs for many years, it is not always immediately obvious what is going wrong in a dog interaction. This was the case when Cayo first arrived at our house. We knew Sydney had met many dogs,  gets along well at day care,  has had many dogs in our home and never had had a problem with her interactions. But she was not happy for the first hour or so with Cayo..she would play  with him and invite him to play but then nip at him every once in a while when they were in close quarters - we were quick to jump all over Sydney but we knew this was not her regular way of interacting. First I wondered if she was not feeling well or if as she is finding her place as she has moved from puppy to adult she was not sure of her body language and place in the family. We had also had a very stressful day so I considered if that tension was upsetting her..however...  Careful watching, some photos and  thinking helped us understand the situation.   It was another lesson of watch your dogs, know how your dogs have interacted with other dogs, and try to see what is different in this interaction. Thank you to Drs. Patricia McConnell and Sophia Yin for writing your books on understanding body language in dogs and discussing  dogs who are lacking good  manners with other dogs. We were able to help set boundaries with a young pup rather than Sydney feeling overwhelmed with the responsibility. Cayo quickly learned respect for older dogs, to watch the other dog's body language and to keep his teeth to himself in play. He was a star  pupil and Sydney is really enjoying him now.

Cayo  and Sydney are enjoying great play times after we watched their play and studied some photos and helped to create safe play rules and situations.

Sydney was willing to be submissive in play but not to be bit for  her efforts.

Cayo quickly picked up when the treats were being handed out and who would be doing it...he is a smart fellow!

Cayo waiting to drink but now will drink with the Sydney and Jewel.

Cayo knew to get right up on Wes to make sure he got his fair share of orange!

Play hard and then just drop off to sleep..what a good boy!

Cayo enjoying a good snack and he quickly learned not to leave it about if he wanted it!

We are having a great time with Cayo and find him to be lovely to look at, loving in nature and a quick learner.

We also re-learned a lot...
