Newest girl in our lives

Introducing Kiwi, a Vizsla - Wire-haired, from England. I am a co-owner of her but she will be living with one of the other owners for the most part. I will have the  thrill of show training and showing her.
She was at the vet yesterday so I snapped a few photos of her. She is 6 months old today and is really coming together nicely. She also has a lovely temperament and loves to kiss.

She is officially called Gingerwire Grand Alliance. Here is a link to her full pedigree     http://www.vizsladatabase.com/details.php?id=114020

Here is the link to her breeder's web site   http://wirevizslas.com/

This breeder has judged the breed at Crufts, the largest dog show in the world.

Christmas Tree 2014

The tree is trimmed, the presents wrapped, the house is decorated too and now we wait for Santa Claus to bring our family home.

Jasmine from our 2007 litter

Jasmine, daughter of our Jewel, sure is looking like Jewel and like her Grandmother Amber. While it brings tears to my eyes to look at these photos her owners sent, they are tears of joy and love. Thank you so much..a wonderful Christmas gift to see our girls shine through Jasmine!

Merry Christmas

For me, the reason for the Christmas season is Christ.
The giving of gifts, the gathering together, the inclusion of the animals; all come from that teaching.

For everyone celebrating this season however, regardless of the reasons, we wish you each a wonderful holiday season and safe travels. We wish you love and joy, good health and happiness.  We wish you the joy of love of your companion animals as they form part of your family.

May peace fill your hearts and  your homes.

News

We are so happy for my daughter and her boyfriend. As she announced when she called...we have closed!!

They are now landlords for the next year ( the previous owner needs some time before she moves) and then they will be able to enlarge their condo apartment by joining the two side by side condos units together.

It will be a very big project but they will be able to live well  in their beautiful current place while a lot of the work is being done before any adjoining walls come down or entrances are punched through the living spaces to join the two areas. This will not only increase their living space of course, ( well over doubling it)  but it will mean they will then have a view that sweeps from the north to the east towards Central Park. They will also have sunshine access from those two directions also, something that is not always available in high rise living in a huge city.

It is a very exciting time and wonderful Christmas present to begin this next journey for them.

This and that again

Maggie from our 2004 litter has always had cats as her household companions.  Recently her owners sent these photos of the cats in Maggie's favourite dog bed by the fireplace while Maggie accepts the dog bed in a little less of a prime location.   Maggie made sure she had the best bed location  once the cats left it! It is so nice to see dogs and cats  living so well together; thank you owners for sharing these photos with us!

We have news that Sam from our 2010 litter will be coming to us for a few days in February 2015. It will be nice to have the littermates Sydney and Sam together again for that time.

Important links to understand how the immune system works

Please read each one carefully as it seems this area, the immune system, is often not well understood and choices for dogs are made more on false information than on known facts.

Game bird

This morning one of our Vizslas indicated something 'new' and very interesting in a tree outside one of the windows.  Sure enough, a  ruffed grouse in the tree taking the berries about 15 feet off the ground.  We don't see many game birds in this area so it is great to see this one. Sydney was confused as to why she could see it but could not smell it..she kept moving around trying to pick up the scent but the window of course made that impossible.  She did point it eventually choosing to believe her eyes and not worry about lack of scent I guess.

Recent photos

Maggie from our 2004 litter loves her new pig toy! She makes sure she keeps it away from her kitty housemates.

Angus from our 2012 litter is perhaps not too sure that his new snow shoes are the best thing that has ever happened to him.  Angus is soon going to have a great acreage home for his running and playing pleasure. We hope the move goes well and they are soon settled.

Rogue from our 2012 litter has found a wonderful new play companion Nike,  at her new home.

Rogue is backing Nike on point. She is a strong natural hunter, extremely loving and cuddley girl. She is bringing a lot of love and joy into the family that bred and co-owns her sire.  She is also with her paternal grandmother Ruby.

Thank you so much owners for sharing these times with your dogs with us; they mean so much to us.

Jewel

Ch. Blackbullet Varazs Legacy NAVHDA NA ( Ch. Varazs On Point At Blackbullet X Am/Can Ch. Legacy's Leaps N Bounds). Born on Valentines Day, 2004. Jewel. One of 3 girls and 4 boys. The only litter of her mother Amber, Jewel was our chance to capture Amber..and she did and more.

She lived her name - Jewel.

She was mother to 3 litters. In 2007, Kathy Rust welcomed Jewel into her home for a breeding to her Hudson. 8 wonderful pups were born. Kati was selected to carry on from that breeding. In 2009 Carla Slabaugh welcomed Jewel to join with her Dezso and in 2010 we made yet another great connection with Sylvia Dorosh and her boy Blaze for litters of 8 and 9 pups. From that 2010 litter we kept our Sydney.

Jewel was an outstanding mother, nursing and caring for  and teaching her pups until the day they left at 9 - 10 weeks of age.

Jewel had some success in the show ring. She took the breed 3 times over American and Canadian champions to finish her championship with a group 3 from Virginia Lynne. She won the VC Alberta breed booster in 2005.

Jewel was my first dog to experience formal field work with me as the trainer and handler. We were lucky that a NAVHDA group started up in 2004 so Jewel was able to run her NAVHDA NA with success in spite of my many errors. 5 of her offspring also were able to run and complete their NA titles in our NAVHDA club. Several of her pups are active hunting dogs on upland birds and ducks and geese.

Jewel was Grandmother to one litter, born in 2012.

Jewel's most wonderful accomplishments however were in our home. She was a dog that could be with any other dog, an outstanding leader, a very loving and patient personality who seemed to know what was needed in a situation almost before I had thought of it. She seemed to like to teach other dogs how to use the dog door, find their way around the property, use the toys etc. She taught me many things but most important was to stand back and not over direct dogs.
She was funny and smart, caring and sensitive, gentle and strong willed  - she was Jewel.

October 1, 2014, after such a promising morning of her running in the pastures, playing like a pup and being able to see, she began to seizure and we could not pull her from them. Up to the time of her blindness a week earlier, she had never had an health issue. Her blood, and urine work, chest x-rays and examination done just an hour before she seized were not pointing us to an issue. We, in the end, believe she had a cranial tumour.

I am so thankful I was at the clinic with her, that the best of possible care was available to her and the wonderful love and respectful attention from the outstanding staff and vets helped to lead Jewel and me through this terrible time. Thank you so much Dr. Theresa Knox, thank you, thank you.

She was my girl. My heart girl. So much my child - dog. She was a Jewel, a shining Jewel. It is gut wrenching to be without her.

One of her favourite spots..in the sun on the back of the sofa. Here her daughter Sydney shares the sofa with her.
