A lot of things have happened over the last month or so. The most crushing and difficult has been the sudden loss of our wonderful Vizsla Remmie.

Remmie was Am/Can Ch. Legacy's Leaps and Bounds. He was born in Pennsylvania and came to us at 3 years of age. He had had a very hard first 3 years after he left his wonderful breeder and it took him a long time to relax and show us what a wonderful dog he was. He loved every dog he met and had an innate ability to 'read' other dogs. He loved the puppies in each litter, showing them toys, running with them once they were big enough. His kisses were so sweet and his desire to touch and be touched once he gained confidence with us was so warming.

Remmie left us very suddenly on Dec 17. We believe he had blood vessel failure in his brain and thorax.

Remmie was sire to two litters, one born in 2004 and one in 2005. He was grand sire to 4 litters, one an outside breeding, to date.

I miss him every day, terribly. He was 11 years old.

Sydney is our keeper pup from our 2010 litter. By 10 months of age she has completed her first field title, won puppy group and a group 4th placement in the ring. That is all for field and show work for now. Over the winter Sydney will continue with her show training classes and start her pre-agility classes to make sure she is continuing her socialization and skill building and our one on one team building too. We are having a great time!

Chillie, 2010 litter has such a great life running and playing on Vancouver Island! In the two photos below he is 10 months of age and is a very lovely boy. Thank you owners for these great photos of Chillie!

The three photos below are of Zsofi from our 2007 litter. Zsofi recently was attacked by coyotes but has regained most of her confidence now. Her many puncture wounds have healed well due to the very diligent care of her owners.

This black and white photo below is of Zsofi, sitting, and her Vizsla uncle and housemate Chester on the right, from our 2004 litter.

Their owner had a portrait painter take photos of their horses and some photos of the Vizslas were also done.

The photos below are of Chester alone. Chester is from our 2004 litter. Chester helped his housemate Zsofi escape from the coyotes when he barked at them and got them to let go of Zsofi and chase him. This allowed Zsofi and him to get back to the house to safety! Our hero!

2009 litter OFA results to date

Our 2009 litter of our Jewel X Dezso turned 2 years of age in July. Their owners are now getting their hip xrays done for OFA scoring. The results to date have been very good.

Horton - Hips scored OFA Good
Kyber - Hips scored OFA Excellent
Jasper - Hips scored OFA Good and Elbows Normal

Thank you so much owners for getting this done and now knowing you can participate in agility and other sports without worry about the dog's hips!

I will post the results for the rest of the litter as they become available.

New Champion Blackbullet's JMPN Red Jellybean

We are happy to announce another Blackbullet show champion! He took the breed last Saturday to finish in style. Rufous was breeder/co-owner handled all the way from the bred by exhibitor class.

His show career has been supported by his wonderful owner Monica who spent many hours on the road so he could get to me to go to the shows and to come to the shows when she could. She also worked hard to make sure he was in good condition and weight and was ready to show.

Thank you so much Monica for all your support! Thank you Rufous for being such a great boy and taking it all in stride.

BPIG, Group 4 Blackbullet's Waltzing Matilda NAVHDA NA

Our Sydney, at 10 months of age has added another designation to her name..she is now also a Group 4th winner. She was breeder/owner handled all the way. The judge has seen a few Vizslas, having judged the Vizsla Club of America national specialty in 2003 and being awarded that assignment again in 2012.

Her brother Ridley - Blackbullet Jewel's Kurri - also made his dog show debute and with little training, proved what a confident and smart dog he is by adjusting very well to the demands of the situation. He really did everything I asked of him. The winners male competition was won by his sire, handled by a professional handler on the two days he showed, so while he did not come away with any points, he won his class and he certainly won hearts. Ridley is also NAVHDA NA titled, again an accomplishment with very little training opportunity that he pulled out of his hat at the last moment. He continues to amaze me each time.

Vida ( 2009 litter) and her family's other dog Bobby came for a quick visit last week. Sydney and Vida had a great play time while Bobby enjoyed exploring the area and getting attention.

Our Sydney from our 2010 litter has added another designation to her name. Unfortunately the hastily taken 'professional' photo taken of the BPIG win was not the right colour but I hope to have another one taken soon.

'Thank you so much' goes to professional photographer Barna Tanko of Calgary Alberta for taking and providing these photos of my 3 - 8 month old Vizslas who ran their NAVHDA Natural Ability tests in August 2011. Barna is also one of the owners of the sire to the litter, Blaze, pictured below on the right with his son Sam.

Jersey has been in her new home for almost two weeks. How very lucky we were to find this wonderful family for her who were in love with her at first sight! Lots of safe off leash runs, a fellow hunting dog to play with, laps to sit on, classes to attend and when she is ready, hunting trips too..it is a wonderful life for a wonderful Vizsla girl. Rufous goes Best of Breed both days shown

Rufous above wondering what all the packing was about...soon found out as we headed out to our last show of the year. Although travelling is not his favourite thing, he remains happy as long as he is with 'his people'.

At a large show in Alberta Rufous (2007) litter took the breed both days shown. On Sunday judge Pat Trotter asked if I had bred him and then commented on what a lovely Vizsla he is in both the breed and group judging. It didn't transfer to a group ribbon but he got a good look from her in the group. He was a bit distracted in the group as he had caught the scent of his owner in the stands but he held his stacks well. That's it for dog shows for this year!

September and October have been busy months here....above Jewel (2004 litter) and visitor Blaze play in October.

Remmie is a wonderful companion with outstanding temperament with other dogs and the sire of two litters who have carried on his traits so well. Happy Birthday Remmie!!

Goodbye great friend

It is with a very heavy heart that I report we have lost our wonderful Paladin at just over 15 years of age. I delivered him August 15, 1995.

Paladin was one of those lifetime dogs...you don't get many of those in your life. He was under a year old when I was diagnosed with PPS and saw my planned world slowly but surely fall apart. When I didn't know how to go on, Paladin showed me..with his gentle way of laying on my bed for hours, his ability to temper his play and his steps to mine...and in his way of bringing out the best in other dogs he met. He was a dog wise beyond his years right from the start and far wiser than any dog should be. He 'registered' the environment and took on a lot of monitoring and adjusting to it..just like his mother CJ but with a more giving side to him. He was biddable and gentle and a wonderful soul.

He was also a beautiful dog, and group winner and placer many times.

He will stand alone in my memory and in my heart, my dearest Paladin.

Our dearest and most wonderful Dalmatian, Paladin was born on this day 15 years ago. I can remember that day like yesterday. That litter was so outstanding..in the show ring, in their personalities, in the love of other dogs and good health. His mother, our equally wonderful CJ, also lived a long and healthy life and was an amazing dog. We know we were so blessed with these dogs.

Each day is special with Paladin in it; an intact male who never met a dog he didn't like and who taught many dogs how to be dogs and read dog language.

To our dearest boy, Happy Birthday Paladin.

Rufous in show

Above, our Rufous is in front and Blaze is right behind. We hope to include Blaze in our breeding program soon.

After sumbitting several entries to shows with no other Vizslas, two lovely boys were entered in the Calgary show at Spruce Meadows on Saturday and Sunday. Rufous came away with the BB on Sunday. The last time he was out with competition, he came away with a 3 point BB so it was nice to see his value recognized again. We were also very lucky Barna Tanko, owner of the other Vizsla, Blaze, kindly took lots of photos of the boys and made up a CD for us. Thank you so much Barna! On Sunday the judge Dr. Ronald Spritzer from Ohio was very complimentary of both the dogs shown, recognizing their different styles within the breed standard.

Rufous was bred by us from our 2007 litter and Blaze was bred by Sylvia Dorosh - 2008 litter.

Blaze, a typical 2 year old Vizsla, is having a great time running and jumping in the long field grasses. He also loves to suck soft toys..just like our Remmie...and play tug a war with other dogs. As an only dog at his house, he has had to learn that not all dog dishes are his, not all toys are his and not all laps are his alone..and with some gentle guideance on those things, he is getting along very well in the multi dog environment. We continue to love his conformation, attitude and personality! On his trip to the vet for his hip and elbow xrays, he greeted everyone with a wagging tail and everyone loved him.

Today marks the 8th birthday of our Kati - Ch. Varazs HPR Kata of Blackbullet FDJ. Kati is the mother to one litter born 5 years ago. She has always been a very smart dog with a keen nose for birds and fun. She loves to retrieve and collect toys of all shapes and sizes and keep them from the other dogs. Puppy and hunting photos are provided by her breeder Sylvia Dorosh. Happy Birthday to our dearest Kati!

Kati on point - Ch. Blackbullet Hudson's Touch NAVHDA NA PRIZElll - from our 2007 litter has had her eyes CERF cleared as 'Normal'! She is also OFA hip scored Good and elbow scored Normal. Her 2010 thyroid results also showed normal ratings and no antibodies.

Vida ( Jewel X Dezso, 2009) is here for a few days and we are having a great time with her. Her first time in an xpen, she quickly settled in to that new environment.

Above Remmie (2000) surveys his world - his grandson was trying to get him to play and it looks to me like Remmie is trying to find a place of internal peace..or planning his next big play move!

Our daughter is arriving from her eastern USA home and we are celebrating her birthday and her 10 year anniversary since she moved to the USA to get her PhD post doc. and now is working there.

We have received some rain so if I could dance, I would!

The dogs are doing well and we are blessed Rufous staying with us one more week. Perhaps he will return later in the summer.

The months of disappointment

It looks life being flexible will be the characteristic required to get us through this spring and summer! Ultra sound showed no puppies on board from our Kati ( 2007) breeding. We will try again on her next cycle.

A meniscus tear is the issue with my knee. MRI will be used to confirm and then set a course for repair and recovery.

But on the good news side, Rufous (2007) remains with us and brings us such joy each day - such a lovely boy with wonderful temperament. He and his mother Jewel and Granddogs Amber and Remmie get along so well. In the photo, after pulling apart a toy, Jewel and Rufous work off some energy with a good play.

Missed dog shows

The end of March and beginning of April brought some disappointments. After working with Astro and Rufous for their dog show experiences, the Friday night of the show set up brought it all to a screeching stop when I managed to fall on the concrete and damage my knee. Still hobbling about waiting for the swelling to go down enough to see if any damage has been done to the knee joint but perhaps more disappointing was the loss of the progress Astro had made in his show training. Such is life. Astro went home to reduce the work for me for now but I do hope that the summer provides more opportunity to get him, Rufous and Jax in the show ring.

Astro a Vizsla from our 2009 litter, has come to stay while his family goes on a holiday and as he prepares for his first dogs shows. Rory a mixed Husky, has come to us so her family can welcome a baby into this world. These two pups were immediate friends! They played hard and slept well. We are so happy they could come to us. Thank you owners!

Mocha Bean

It is with great sadness when yesterday I shared our final kiss with our wonderful Mocha Bean. Taken with cancer way too soon, she fought with great strength until she could fight no more. Mocha was born March 25 1999. She was strong, outgoing, determined, loving, and beautiful. She filled our hearts with laughter and joy and now, with terrible loss.

Kati hasn't visited us for over 1 1/2 years..time sure flies .. but when she saw my van pulling into the parking lot from the road, she went wild on the end of the leash - she knows my van!

We are having such a great time with her - lots of talking, lots of playing and lots of hugs! Her mother Jewel and grandma Amber are having a great time playing with her as is Remmie as seen in these photos.

Our puppy placement families become just that, part of our extended family. They are not only the unit that loves and protects one of our pups, they are people we admire and who have a very special place in our hearts. It is therefore extremely hard when one of those members is taken from us. It is with very heavy heats then that we receive the news that Lesia, one of the guardians and owners of our Rufus ( 2004 litter) has passed away suddenly.

Lesia and her daughter flew from Ontario to spend time with that 2004 litter. We were so happy to meet them and see them fall in love with those pups. Lesia's deep love of family and animals was immediately obvious. When they left, the list of pups they preferred I believe included every male in the litter and we were very happy we had a wonderful puppy to offer them from that litter.

Over the last 6 years Lesia and her husband Jeno worked with Sylvia to get a championship title on Rufus and to provide a wonderful and loving home to him. We knew we were blessed to have them both in our family circle.

Now Rufus is having a hard time without the support and love of Lesia and no way of understanding what has happened. We know that Jeno and Rufus and family will support each other in the days ahead as they try to find their way. Our prayers and our hearts are with them.

Our 2004 litter was a wonderful Valentine's Day gift and now they turn 6 years of age! They each remain healthy and their Mom Amber (12 years old ) and their Dad Remmie (9 1/2 years old) are doing very well too!

Our Jewel from that litter has had 2 wonderful litters and we hope this year will become a grandmother herself!

Our wonderful Amber turned 12 years of age - and she still likes to hog her toys! Amber was bred by Sylvia Dorosh of Varazs Vizslas. She was our second Vizsla from Sylvia. Her sire is from Legacy Kennel in Pennsylvania. Amber is mother to one litter born in 2004 and grandmother to 2 litters - one born in 2007 and another in 2009. Her wonderful personality, and lovely form that won her Best in Group wins has proven to be a wonderful bases for her line. Pictured beside Amber is our Remmie who sired Amber's only litter and also added his outstanding characteristics to his pups. Remmie too was bred by Diane Shearer of Legacy Kennels. We can't thank Sylvia and Diane enough for all their mentoring and for breeding wonderful dogs for us to continue with our lines of Vizslas! We salute you as we celebrate the 12th birthday of our Amber (also known as Ambie Bambie).

We are very excited to report Peter from our January 2007 litter is coming to stay with us for while. He lives near Denver Colorado so we don't get to see him often. It will be a very exciting time to have him, his mother Jewel and his grandparents Amber and Remmie all together again. Above is a photo of Peter when he came to visit in December 2008 at almost 2 years of age.

Then, near Christmas Vida (2009 litter) is coming to visit too while her family takes a little holiday. I'm pretty sure they will need this break and we are thrilled she will be here.

Rex was lost very tragically at 4 1/2 years of age before we could use him for our own litter, but looking into this face of his son, he lives on.

Thank you owners for sending these recent photos of some of the pups! By all reports each puppy has quickly become a greatly treasured family member. The puppy socialization classes are going well for both team members - handler and puppy. We have received the individual registration certificate for each puppy from the Canadian Kennel Club confirming each pup's registration.

Vida is learning to save her teeth for her toys - such a hard thing for a puppy!

3 generations

While our litter was here, we were lucky to have 3 generations able to participate in the fun. Remmie on the left is father to Jewel on the right who is mother to litter in the foreground.

Both adult dogs loved to play and teach the young ones how to be dogs. Remmie showed amazing patience as the pups try to climb his sides and as he engaged them in games of chase and catch.

It has been a very busy time with the arrival, raising and placement of our Vizsla litter.

We could not be happier however with our pups and with the placement homes. We thank each owner for sending us photos and keeping us updated on each pup's progress.

We have not forgotten our other owners either! We thank each of them for the updates on their dogs and photos of their activities.

I want to wish a belated Happy Birthday to our wonderful Palidin from our 1995 litter. He remains such a wonderful companion and friend to us and to every dog he meets.

Also a belated Happy Birthday to our equally wonderful Remmie who turned 9 years old this month. Sire to two litters and now grand sire to 2 litters, his great qualities are coming through in those dogs too.

We love you both more than words can express!

We are thrilled to hear Kaiser's (2007 litter) results from his hip and elbow xrays for the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals came back as hips Good and elbows Normal! He is the 7th pup in the litter to be done. Thank you so much owners!
Our 2009 litter continues to thrive and Jewel is an amazing mother.
Amy (2004 litter ) and Seth (2005 litter) are both reported to be doing very well. There is a chance we will get to see them this fall.

Grandparents - what's all the fuss

Maternal Grandparents Remmie and Amber are just happy they got new toys in all the fuss over their daughter' Jewel's impending litter delivery. Well new toys and some special food treats because that Jewel is getting special food, might have its up side. Amber does not like Jewel being away from her and has decided the whelping room can just as well hold them both. I guess we will see how that plays out when the delivery starts.

Kaiser (2007 litter)

Kaiser posed with a budding dog handler, one of his owners, Alexandria in May. They make a lovely picture together! Alexandria is a natural trainer who loves to see Kaiser respond to her work with him even at her young age. Pictured above them, Kaiser is professionally presented by Alexandria's mother, his current trainer Carey, as they had prepared for their first dog show together - a very successful day with Kaiser taking the breed on the Sunday!

Showing a dog is far more complicated than it appears but Carey did an excellent job in training and presenting their Kaiser. Kaiser has since had his hips and elbows xrayed so we are awaiting his results. Thank you very much Carey, James, Willem and Alexandria for all the wonderful love, care and opportunities you give Kaiser each day! Jewel day 50 June 22,2009

Jewel at day 50 of her pregnancy is starting to rest more and eat smaller, more frequent meals. She enjoys a nice slow belly rub with warm hands sometimes. Her breathing is more laboured when she is sleeping now too..space is beginning to seem like downtown Manhattan in there now I'm pretty sure as the litter grows. I have felt slight movement in the last few days that seem to be more than just fluid. I would expect we should soon feel the kicking of all those little feet!

NAVHDA training day

We had a great area and good weather for our June training day. Above Blaze ( Varazs Vizslas) has just caught the bird scent. There was also an Onpoint Vizsla that had a very good first NAVHDA training day too. A little more breeze during parts of the day would have been useful to the dogs but overall, the dogs and their humans had a good training day.

Maggie ( Amber X Remmie - 2004) recently met up with several Vizslas at the beach for a wonderful romp in the water and sand. Her owners, who sent this photo, hope they can do it more often. I am sure Maggie had a great time! Those of us who do not have ocean and beach available to us and our dogs can imagine this is pretty close to heavenly. Thank you so much owners for sharing it with us. Maggie is in the fore ground on the right. She is an only dog who shares her home with her cat friends so I imagine a rough and tumble play with fellow Vizslas was a very special treat. It is wonderful for us to see her having such a great time.

More OFA results for 2007 litter

We have received the OFA hip score of GOOD and an elbow score of NORMAL on Kati (Ch. Blackbullet Hudson's Touch NAVHDA NA) from our 2007 litter! Kati will soon also have her first eye and thyroid tests done this year.

Thank you so much owners for having this done. We are thrilled with the results of course and thank those who have bred the dogs that have formed her pedigree for working to select dogs who carried the genes to make these results possible.

Pictured on the left Kati tells her brother Kaiser that she owns the sofa while their mother Jewel lays along the back of the sofa and takes in the outside view. Kati and Kaiser were both able to visit at the same time so we were very lucky as Kaiser has since moved to Ottawa.

Other news:

Zsofi ( 2007 litter) is reported to be having a great summer with her Vizsla uncle Chester (2004 litter) and carrying on her mother's tradition of making sure the best cuddle spots are hers!
Jasmine (2007 litter) is going to holiday with her family in the Kelowna area this year. We hope she can get together with her litter mate Fred while they are there for a good Vizsla play time.
Jewel is really increasing in size and shape quickly. It could be due to a large litter or due to this being her second litter. We have started feeding her puppy food to increase her caloric intake and benefit from the different balance of nutrients in the puppy food. She seems pleased with this food now if she waits for breakfast until about noon when her stomach has settled a bit. We seem to be past the worst of the nausea and regurgitation she was experiencing up to this week.
I am working with the several of the owners and breeders of many of the dogs in the pedigree of Jewel's expected litter to up date and complete a 6 generation pedigree to keep us current on those dog's accomplishments and also to be made available to our puppy owners. We are also putting the finishing touches on the whelping room as it changes from office to delivery and litter room. I am making crate pads for small crates in anticipation of their 'going home' packages while I have the time.
